Why Our Medical Office Assistant Program?

Are you an excellent communicator with a passion for organization and helping others? Then a career as a medical office assistant may be the path for you!

Working in an administrative role within the health care system, medical office assistants, also known as medical office administrators or receptionists, are a crucial part of the healthcare system. Working in a variety of healthcare settings such as clinics, hospitals, dental offices and more, medical office assistants have a unique combination of communication skills, organizational skills, technical skills, and an interest in the medical field. From greeting clients at the door to taking their vital signs, medical office assistants help keep healthcare operations running!

MaKami College’s 10-month (900 hour) Medical Office Assistant certificate program at our Edmonton and Calgary, Alberta locations is offered in a blended online and in-person format. The medical office assistant courses include online theory courses and in-class components, making it easy to balance school with your family and life. Students can earn a MOA certificate in under a year and start working as a medical office assistant in as little as 10 months! And at MaKami, you get a laptop with all your program curriculum fully loaded!

About the Medical Office Assistant Certificate Program

MaKami’s unique Medical Office Assistant program is based on a case study format. On your first day of school, you are “hired” as a medical office assistant in a mock company. You will have imaginary clients, co-workers, tasks and assignments, giving you the edge to hit the ground running when you graduate less than a year later!

Using the latest technology, all students will be provided with a laptop for their studies, fully loaded with their program curriculum. MOA certificate students spend the first four months of their program mastering basic office administrative functions. They then transition into developing healthcare-specific skills, including healthcare fundamentals, medical terminology, medical software and more.

Students taking medical office administration courses learn:

  • The healthcare system and what medical office assistants need to know in Alberta
  • The importance of the MOA role in patient-centred care
  • Medical office scheduling and billing software
  • Infection prevention and control strategies to protect yourself and your patients
  • The basics in professional communications, medical office administration, interpersonal skills, computers and technology
  • Healthcare fundamentals, medical terminology and basic clinical procedures
  • Customer service skills and strategies for anticipating patient needs and using positive care approaches to patient interactions

In the last month of the medical office assistant program, students will get real-life experience with 160 hours of practicum training that you can include in your resume as experience, even before you graduate.

Receive Additional Certifications

In addition to a variety of transferrable skills, including keyboarding, Microsoft Office, career preparation and more, you’ll also earn certifications in First Aid and Privacy Awareness in Healthcare Training.
